SEO overkill can hurt your site in more ways than one. Many people wonder, “Just how much SEO do they really need in their site?” One report says 15 - 20% keyword density while another report says 1 – 4%. Which is correct? Take the high road and professionalize your SEO technique.

How much SEO is really needed?
Over stuffing your website’s content with keywords can make you look “spammy” and get you a fast ticket to the search engine chopping block. A consistent and sound SEO strategy that you can manage will get more benefits such as website traffic that is built automatically through a consistent effort. Attempting to cut the process short will work against you and in terms of credibility your reader base and with the search engines.

If you’re using a social media strategy along with your SEO practices, your keyword stuffing could get others to view you as a “spammer” and you’ll not be well received by the social media site. Overusing keywords are just plain annoying to read. How many times have you gone to a site only to have erroneous words all over the page? What do you read and what is important? The website has keywords strewn all over the page and somewhere in the middle is the content article. Don’t you get dizzy just thinking about it?

You have an image and an online reputation to create and uphold. Your SEO strategy can make you or break you because it shows who you really are. Once you get “labeled” it’ll be hard to shake that image especially if it’s a negative one. A page that is well-designed and has great content brings credibility to the author. You’ll look like a “guru” and win the loyalty of your audience.

What should a good site look like? Limit keyword “excess” in your domain name, folders and page names. Make sure these items match your content, don’t overdo it.

Titles tags and meta description tags are necessary components of your website, but again, avoid excess use. Use only a few keywords in your tags and descriptions at a time.

Provide a clear way for your audience to take action on your site. Too many links or keywords all over the page can cause your audience to get lost in the process. Make your conversion step clear and easy to see and do.

Avoid misspellings. Spammers misspell. If you’re serious about your business, then have a professional look. You’ll gain the confidence of your audience and the respect of your peers as well.

Make your page scannable. It’s estimated that 79% of readers scan a web page and only 16% read word for word. This means you’ll need compelling titles and easy to read content in order to get them interested in reading what you have to say.

Taking a professional approach to your SEO strategy will ensure a long lasting audience. Eliminate SEO overkill before you become internet “road kill”.
